Jacob Kurtzberg nasce a New York City (NY) il 28 Agosto del 1917. Fu di origini estremamente umili. Il padre era un
immigrato austriaco di origini ebree che si guadagnava da vivere come operaio. Il giovane Jacob era peraltro spesso
coinvolto in risse da strada con altri ragazzi della sua età.
La sua carriera nel mondo del fumetto inizia nel 1935 lavorando come disegnatore per i Fleischer Studios.
Inizialmente firmò le sue tavole sotto diversi pseudonimi. Jack Kirby sarà quello con il quale sarà conosciuto
nell'Industria dei Comics per la maggior parte della sua carriera.
Negli Anni '40 inizia una prolifica collaborazione con lo scrittore Joe Simon. Da questo connubio nacquero
diversi personaggi, il più importante dei quali fu Captain America per la Timely Comics (1941),
tuttora grande icona del fumetto americano.
Il sodalizio fra i due autori si interrompe alla fine degli anni '50.
Kirby torna agli eroi in costume all'inizio degli anni '60 quando inizia la sua lunga collaborazione con Stan Lee e la
Marvel Comics. In questo periodo disegna e partecipa alla creazione di numerosi personaggi che vanno dai Fantastici
Quattro a Thor, da Hulk a Silver Surfer.
All'inizio degli anni '70 approda alla DC Comics dove rivitalizza una testata di
discutibile qualità come Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. Inoltre crea Kamandi e soprattutto il variegato affresco del Quarto
Mondo attraverso titoli quali i Nuovi Dei, Mr Miracle e Forever People.
Nella seconda metà degli anni '70 torna alla Marvel
dove crea gli Eterni.
Jack Kirby muore nel 1994 dopo aver lasciato una quantità sterminata di personaggi, idee ed uno stile
inconfondibile. Riposa nel cimitero di Thousand Oacks, in California. La lapide reca l'incisione di una corona a ricordo e
celebrazione del suo appellativo di "King of Comics".
